Australian Cypress Wood Flooring

Australian cypress wood flooring is the perfect choice when you want to achieve a warm rustic look in any room of your home. You can choose this type of wood in solid hardwood flooring or in engineered hardwood flooring where only the top layer is made from Australian cypress wood. Australian cypress wood flooring is available in cream straw, honey and brown tones and the wood is filled with darker colored character knots.

Depending on where you live, you may have to pay more if you want to have Australian cypress wood flooring. Since this wood grows slowly in arid and semi-arid areas of Australia, it is a specialty wood. Even the Australian cypress engineered hardwood flooring is more expensive than the regular engineered hardwood flooring. It is in high demand as the only commercial softwood that is harder than red oak. This makes it very desirable for flooring and furniture manufacturing.

Over time you may notice that your Australian cypress wood flooring will start to change color. Since wood is a natural product it does change color as it ages. Staining the Australian cypress flooring will make it even darker as it ages. Even with Australian cypress engineered hardwood flooring exposure to the sun will deepen the colors. You may not even notice it unless you move a rug or mat that you have had in place for a long time. You will notice that the Australian cypress wood underneath the mat or rug is lighter. This is why if you do have hardwood flooring, you should move the mats and rugs on a regular basis.

Some of the characteristics of Australian cypress wood that make it very attractive for use in flooring include the fact that it is very stable. Oil finishes are the best ones to use on Australian cypress wood flooring and you can refinish these floors if you wish when you notice that the shine is starting to get dull. Like other types of hardwood, you can purchase Australian cypress engineered hardwood flooring as prefinished or unfinished, depending on how much work you want to do yourself.

Over time, Australian cypress wood flooring will start to crack. This is not a structural problem with the solid hardwood or engineered hardwood. Areas around the knots will start to crack and peel and this is part of the appeal of this type of flooring. If you are not looking to eventually have a floor that will show its age, then the Australian cypress wood flooring may not be the kind for you.
